For a long time, computerisation changed very little. The first word-processers were really just typewriters with screens: the typist could go back and change the text but everything was still printed in the same way it had always been. At length, computers were able to display digital representations of pages, but although these could in theory have taken many forms, for a long time nothing much changed.
